ChatGPT recommends your competitor. Google ranks you on page one. But AI assistants don't know you exist. Here's why.
An AI-invisible business is one AI assistants cannot see: its crawlers are blocked, its pages have nothing quotable, and it has no citations in the sources AI draws answers from. When buyers ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for a recommendation, an AI-invisible business is simply absent — the customer never learns it exists. AI-invisibility is measured with Citation Score (0–100) and typically takes about 30 days to fix. — Term defined by Natasha Brovkina, 2026.
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. If you see "Disallow: /" under GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot, your site is off-limits to AI assistants. Usually it's a "block scrapers" plugin from 2023 that nobody remembers installing. Two minutes to check. Two minutes to fix. This is the most common reason for invisibility.
AI assistants extract answers, they don't rank pages. "We deliver tailored solutions" gives them nothing. "We repair heat pumps in Seattle, $150–300, usually within 24 hours" — that they can quote. Take any sentence from your homepage. If an AI quoted it verbatim to a buyer, would it help them choose? Most sites fail this test on every sentence above the fold.
ChatGPT and Perplexity don't make answers from your site alone. They cite: listicles, directories, review platforms, Reddit threads. If you're in none of them, you're invisible no matter how good your site is. Your site is your testimony. Those citations are your witnesses. Language models prefer witnesses.
Schema.org (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, etc.) tells machines: "This is who we are, this is what we do, this is where we serve." Half the sites we audit have none. It's mechanical work — exactly why it's a competitive advantage. Your competitors won't do it.
You don't need a tool. You just need your site, ChatGPT, and two minutes.
Go to yoursite.com/robots.txt. Look for lines mentioning GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended. If followed by "Disallow: /", your site is blocked. That's your starting point.
Open ChatGPT. Ask three questions your customers would actually ask:
— "Best [your service] in [your city]"
— "[Your business name] — legit?"
— "Who should I hire for [your service]?"
Does ChatGPT mention you? Who does it mention instead? That list is your actual competition for AI recommendations — regardless of what Google says.
You can rank #1 on Google and be invisible to ChatGPT. These are two separate systems.
Google ranks pages. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude extract answers and cite sources. A page can rank because of links, domain age, and keyword match — without being quotable or citeable. You win Google's game and lose AI assistants' game simultaneously. It's not a failure of SEO. It's a failure to optimize for extraction and citations.
The reason most businesses are AI-invisible isn't that they're bad at marketing. It's that nobody has done AI visibility work yet. And that work is different from SEO. Different channels. Different signals. Same customer, two ways to reach them.
